Thank you for your commitment to helping patients across the country by choosing to plan a fundraising event or campaign in support of Canadian Blood Services.

Given recent guidance from the Public Health Agency of Canada (PHAC) to minimize the amount of time individuals spend in large crowds or crowded spaces to reduce the transmission of COVID-19, we understand that you may wish to postpone your upcoming event to a later date.

If you are a fundraising event organizer and have questions or require guidance related to postponing your upcoming event – or, if you wish to shift your fundraising event to an online campaign – please reach out to our Philanthropy Department by phone (613-739-2339) or email (philanthropy@blood.ca).

Blood, Sweat & Gears

Lindsay Bowman, 29, is an avid road cyclist and blood donor from Brantford, ON. Although she already donates blood as frequently as she can (every 84 days), she felt compelled to do even more for patients during the COVID-19 pandemic.

That’s why she combined her passion for cycling and blood donation through her Bike for Blood charity event, which raised $1,565 for Canadian Blood Services and inspired over 15 members of her community to donate blood.

Lindsay rode 153 km on her bike through the countryside between June 30 and July 1, as a nod to Canada’s 153rd birthday.

Her goal was to get 153 people to donate blood. Those who were unable to donate blood or who wanted to increase their impact even further were encouraged to make a financial donation in support of Canadian Blood Services.

“Given the restrictions on the frequency of blood donation (84 days for females; 56 days for males), I am only able to give blood 3-4 time per year. To me, that has never felt like I am doing enough,” says Lindsay, whose parents have both needed blood transfusions in the past.

Her father lost his arm in a workplace accident before Lindsay was born, and her mother required blood after being in a car accident when Lindsay was nine years old.

“Blood donation is something I am passionate about. It’s free, it’s easy and one hour of my life can give someone the rest of theirs.”

This year, due to ongoing guidance from the Public Health Agency of Canada around physical distancing, Lindsay’s fundraising campaign ran “virtually”, and she completed her charity ride solo.

She hopes, however, that once restrictions eventually ease, she can turn her fundraiser into an annual event, where friends and family are able to ride their bikes alongside her.

Tom’s story

Meet Tom Wong. Because of donors like you, Tom’s turning four this year – or, as he explains it, he’s marking four years post-stem cell transplant. After being diagnosed with a rare form of blood cancer, Tom received over 30 blood transfusions and one lifesaving stem cell transplant. Today, he is a proud cancer survivor who has turned is own gift of life into a gift for others. Tom shares his story to help recruit blood and stem cell donors to Canada’s Lifeline, and organizes an annual fundraising event to help give back. He also makes regular, personal financial contributions to Canadian Blood Services.
