It’s often said that life can change in an instant. For Aizad Bilal, at age 10, that’s all the time it took him to bend down and pick up a Pokemon card that he’d dropped as he crossed the street. He was just three houses from his own when he was struck by a car. 

The impact caused a long list of injuries; broken bones and ribs, a massive brain hemorrhage, punctured lungs, and damage to his stomach and spleen. When his mother arrived at the scene, there was so much blood that she could not tell if the young boy laying on the ground was her son. It wasn’t until she saw his shoe laying in the street that she knew it was Aizad. 

On that day in 2011, Aizad had lost so much blood that his heart stopped. Once he was revived, he was rushed to surgery to try and stop the bleeding. During his two months in hospital following the accident, Aizad received over 100 units of blood and blood products.

In Aizad’s moment of need, it was the donors and supporters of Canadian Blood Services who made the life-saving difference.
