How stem cell donation works

At Canadian Blood Services we are dedicated to recruiting healthy, committed potential volunteer donors for patients in need of a stem cell transplant.

Before you consider making a pledge to register, it is important that you review the eligibility criteria, and understand how stem cell donation works if you are identified as someone’s lifesaving match.

Age Matters

You must be between 17 and 35 years old to join Canadian Blood Services Stem Cell Registry.

You may know others who can help

Seventy-two per cent of all stem cell donors chosen to help Canadian patients are male. However, only 40 per cent of the stem cell registry is comprised of male donors. For this reason, young, healthy, diverse male registrants are needed. We encourage you to challenge and inspire a family member, colleague or friend to join Canada’s stem cell registry.

Canada’s stem cell registry should be as diverse as our country

A patient’s best chance of finding a matching donor is among those who share their ethnic background. Donors from as many diverse ethnic and mixed-race backgrounds as possible means greater possibilities for patients looking for a match.
